How to get there

When you want to travel to Zakynthos you have a couple of options, so let’s see them together.

By air:

Whether you’re coming from Athens, or other European cities, chances are you will find flights to Zakynthos Airport Dionysios Solomos (ZTH), also known as Zante Airport.

By ferry:

The only way to get to the island by ferry from the mainland is the Kellini port in the northwestern part of the Peloponnese, or from Kefalonia, another island above Zakynthos. The ride is usually around one hour long.

Although it is more rare and the ride is much longer, you can also find some ferry rides from the coast of Italy.

On every ferry, no matter how short or long the ride you will find plenty of options for food and beverages, tables or chairs both inside and outside.

It is advisable to book your tickets in advance, online, or at one of the ports.

By bus:

From mainland Greece, there are buses that bring you to Zakynthos. KTEL buses go from Athens to Zakynthos, the ride is around 5 hours from Athens to Kellini, where you will get off the bus to take a ferry. When you arrive at the port in Zakynthos you will get back on the bus that will bring you to the bus station.

How to move around

Public Transport

Like in most parts of Greece, KTEL buses operate in Zakynthos. For more detailed information you can ask information at one of their offices or find their website online, as they do not serve the entire island.

Rentals

A rental is always a good idea if you want to see more secluded and remote parts of the island. If you’re looking to rent a car or motorcycle you can do it online or at one of the rental agencies you can find in the main towns.

Just make sure you have a valid driver’s license and be prepared to drive in narrow, winding roads.

Taxi

Taxis are the most expensive way to travel around the island but they can be a good option for the most remote parts of the island if you don’t feel comfortable driving yourself

7 Best Things To Do in Zakynthos, Greece

1. Swim in the Blue Caves

One of my main reasons for visiting Zakynthos was the Blue Caves and I was not disappointed! The contrast between this mesmerizing natural rock formation carved by the water and the vivid blue of the sea will leave you speechless. This is an absolute must for everyone visiting the island.

2. Visit the Shipwreck on Navagio Beach

One of the most iconic spots on Zakynthos, along with the Blue Caves is the Shipwreck Beach, on Navagio Beach

You can find boat tours that include both the Blue Caves and the Shipwreck. The tour was 25 euros, it lasted 3 hours and included two stops, of 15 minutes each, to swim in the beautiful blue water.

3. Spend a night out in Laganas

If you’re looking for an unforgettable night out on the island, the best place is Laganas, the party town of the island. From a calm night at the bar to a night dancing and drinking at the club, here you will find everything you’re looking for and more!

4. Spend time at the beach

Zakynthos is known for its sandy beaches and crystal-clear water.

No visit to Greece is complete without some time spent sunbathing and swimming in the blue waters.

5. Meet the turtles

If you’re visiting Zakynthos don’t miss the opportunity to visit Turtle Island and meet the turtles!

The island is Marathonisi but it is commonly known as Turtle Island because of its shape and because it is a popular nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles. You can easily reach the island from the Bay of Laganas with a glass-bottom boat tour and try to spot the turtles swimming in the water.

6. Take a day trip to Kefalonia

Just a short ferry ride away you’ll find another stunning island: Kefalonia. This is the largest of the Ionian Islands and between Melissani Cave, the beautiful beaches, and the great food, you’ll have plenty to do on your trip.

7. Indulge in the local cuisine

Whether you’re on the mainland or on one of the many islands, Greek food is always delicious. Some of my favorite dishes from Zakynthos were:

Cheese: Feta is of course the most popular Greek cheese, but there’s much more to try during your trip. For example, Tyrokayteri, a creamy cheese, or Ladotyri, that has a rich and peppery taste.

Savory Pies: filled with cheese or spinach.

Fish: that you can find both fried or grilled

And of course, Gyros: grilled meat, typically served with onion, tomatoes, and tzatziki, wrapped in pita bread or served on a platter.
